Learning how to make our own herbal first aid kits!

Greetings Plant Lovers

Tuesday March 28th, 7 – 9 pm will be our next The Ginkgo Tree Herbal Class. We will be meeting here at The Ginkgo Tree, on our family farm. We have a great night planned! As always guests are welcome for a fee of $25.00 (depending on space and pre-registering). Please note: herb course is the last Tuesday of every month (no class in December due to holidays).

We will open classes with a ceremonial blessing of our teachers and students. The ritual of smudging can be defined as "spiritual house cleaning." Thanks to our friend from the Chippewa's of Georgina, Laurie Hoeg, who will perform the ceremony. We will also have our “Tea of the Month” taught by a different student each month. Its so fun to try and experience new teas!

Herbal Travel First Aid Kit (lesson five

What goes into your travel first aid kit?

In this class we will learn how to make a basic kit and then customize it to your needs and your families. Some thoughts while preparing your kit: Digestive issues always hit when you travel? Counting sheep isn’t your idea of helping with sleep issues. Have pain? Get that anxious feeling? Heading to a sunny location and want to bring along sunburn relief? Stinging insects at your destination? Have pain? Get that anxious feeling? Heading to a sunny location and want to bring along sunburn relief? Stinging insects at your destination? Something to consideration is weight and space. If you are taking a road trip, then you may be able to bring along more herbs as opposed to traveling by plane or traveling light with a small backpack. Everyone will go home with basic herbal medicines for your own kit.

Using our Elderberry syrup preventively today.

Classic Elderberry Syrup Recipe
Recommended use: 1tbsp, 4x daily

Organic Ingredients:
* 4 cups cold water
* 2 cups dried Elderberries (or 1 ½ cups Elder berries and ½ cup Elder flowers)
* 1 cinnamon stick
* 1 tsp ginger root
* ½ tsp cloves
* 1 cup raw, local honey (or organic agave syrup for a vegan recipe)
* 1 cup vodka or brandy (optional)

Directions:
1. Combine the berries and herbs with cold water in a pot and bring to a boil.
2. Reduce heat and allow herbs to simmer for 30 to 40 minutes.
3. Remove from heat and mash the berries in the pot.
4. Strain the berries and herbs through cheesecloth and squeeze out liquid.
5. Add honey and gently heat mixture for a few minutes. Do not boil!
6. Turn off heat and let cool slightly.

Elder & Elder Berry Syrup
(sambacus nigra)

The Elder, Also known as Common Elder, Black Elder or Pipe Tree is a common name given to a wide variety of berry producing plants in the Adoxa species. Most kinds of these plants are found in abundance throughout the temperate regions of North and South America, The British Isles and Europe. In England it is often said that the blooming of the Elder flowers marks the beginning of summer and the ripening of the berries marks the start of Fall.

The Pomo people, Indigenous to the northern coastal lands of what is now California, used the blossoming of the Blue Elderberry berries as a window of time to track shellfish.

There are many superstitions and folk myths that have been associated with The Elder over the years. There is a medieval reference in the book Love’s Labour Lost that Judas was hung from the branch of an Elder. Another myth stands to say that the Cross of Calvary itself was made by an Elder. After the expansion of Christianity in Europe it is believed that it was a sin to use an Elder branch as kindling because of its association with Christ. Regardless, If these be truths or not, The Elder, in some cultures, has become the symbol of sorrow and despair.

However, it is also perhaps because of these antiquated myths that elder has gotten a reputation for purity and Holiness. There are multiple account

Hello everyone! A reminder to our Cannington students that we are gathering tomorrow from 7:00-9:00pm in The Ginkgo Tree classroom.

Our class will open with a ceremonial blessing lead by our dear friend Laurie. Followed by us enjoying our tea of the month and then preparing and learning about herbal gifts. Tis the season! You won’t want to miss this class!

Hello herb loving friends! We hope by now you’

Hello herb loving friends!

We hope by now you’ve all had the chance to harvest some Rosehips. If you have we hope you join us in creating the most simple, yet powerful facial oil that will keep our faces moisturized and glowing throughout the cold winter months.

What to do: Air dry Rosehips for at least 2 days to decrease water content. You absolutely could use dried. Break open the Rosehips in your mortar and pestle, just a bit to increase surface level exposure. Transfer to them to a sterilized jar. Cover with grape seed oil until oil is about 1-2 inches above berries and 1 inch from jar lid. Close. Label. Done! Place in a warm, sunny spot and in 4-6 weeks you will have the best facial oil! Alternatively you could place the jar in a water bath (crockpot) on low for 6-8 hours.
