Lecture Description:
MEDICINE OF THE SOUL: The Ritual Use of Plants
Herbs can be used not only as physical medicines, but ritual medicines as well. In this class we will explore the ceremonial use of herbs in various religions, indigenous and traditional cultures. Herbs have been used for millennia and are still used as incense, baths, ritual foods, amulets, teas, entheogens and paints to help grow our spirits, heal our souls, make congregations holy, improve our luck and protect us from malign influences. Often dismissed as superstition, the almost universal use of these spiritual medicines strongly suggests they offer real and powerful benefits especially in our crazy, confusing and anxiety producing world.
THE WORST WEEDS ARE YOUR BEST MEDICINE
When we look at the great systems of herbal medicine (TCM, Ayurveda, Unani-tibb, Eclectic, Tibetan, Kampo, Physio-medicalism, etc) we find that they have large well developed materia medica’s that allow the skilled practitioner to carefully choose the right remedies for each unique person. In the West we seem to have an ever-shrinking number of herbs used by practitioners. Some of this is due to scarcity of over harvested herbs or lack of availability of obscure herbs, some of it is due to bans by the FDA and much of it is because we as herbalists have forgotten much of what our fore bearers learned and left us as our inheritance. In this class we will explore the use of common weedy plants that are commonly used in other parts of the world but are little known or used here in North America. Not only do we discover new allies in our healing journey, we help to reduce the use of scarce native species, while slowing the progression of aggressive invasive foreign plants. Come and learn how to use Purple Loosestrife, Kudzu, Cogon Grass, Mimosa, Ground Ivy, Ragweed, Japanese Knotweed and other weeds found near you.
ADAPTOGENS, HERBS FOR STRENGTH, STAMINA AND STRESS RELIEF
In our modern world we live incredibly busy and stress filled lives. Chronic stress and the resultant elevation of stress hormones such as cortisol have been shown to be an initiator and cofactor for much of our chronic degenerative disease. In addition to stress reduction techniques, healthy relationships, a good diet and adequate sleep, another important factor for reducing stress and enhancing well-being is the use of adaptogenic herbs. In this class we discuss the definition of adaptogens, the rational and effective clinical use of the different adaptogenic herbs, the unique qualities of each herb and how they can improve cognitive function, restore immune and endocrine balance and promote increased mental and physical well being.

Medicinal Plant Sanctuary ~ At Risk Plant Talk & Walk
The Ginkgo Tree is proud to be a Botanical Sanctuary Member with United Plant Savers. UPS’ mission is to protect native medicinal plants of North America and their native habitat while ensuring an abundant renewable supply of medicinal plants for generations to come. With herbs moving into mainstream, and the demand on wild medicinal plants increases we are using up the supply of these herbs. This increased usage along with habitat destruction is causing an ever-increasing shortage of wild plant resources, including some of our most treasured medicinal species. Join us on this walk to learn about United Plant Savers, “At Risk” and “At Watch” medicinal plants and their medicinal uses. Learn how you too, can make a difference!

Most men in Africa take aphrodisiac herbs, especially men aged 50 or more. In West Africa there are many homemade and commercially-made preparations used by men. But women also take aphrodisiac herbs, to increase sensitivity and sexual enjoyment, and when necessary they give herbs to their men to improve performance. In this class we will discuss some of the important aphrodisiac herbs and how they help to reinvigorate the sexual lives of men and women. In this way these herbs promote healing between men and women.

Typically, the Red Tent is a gathering place for women of all ages and backgrounds to come together and celebrate all that it is to be a woman. On this date, we welcome all genders to help get information and enable you to share the beauty of what is found in those women in your life.
The Red Tent is a loving place of support, strength, courage & connectiveness. It is a place where you can rest, nap, journal, laugh, cry or simply observe. Nothing is expected of you in the tent. It is your place to heal and feel loved. The Red Tent is a gift to ourselves so that we remember our greatest strengths & also are kind to our limitations. By attending or giving yourself this time - which in the beginning is the hardest thing of all - we then make a time & place in our life to check in with ourselves & each other so that we can re energize for the rest of the month. We make connections & friendships that deepen our sense of community.

Connecting the hoop with your Sacral Chakra is also an added bonus. The sacral chakra loves movement (especially circular motions). Working with your hips is wonderful for opening the sacral chakra.

Gentle fluid movements and longer held poses allows you to experience the "essence" of Pilates in a yoga practice; through isolation and engagement of muscular strength.
We invite YOU to explore movement as YOUR body requires; while connecting to YOUR breath. We encourage you to come explore the practice of vinyasa yoga (fluid movement paired with the breath) for the perfect practice.
Inspired Steps: Walking with Purpose ~ AN ORIGINAL INSPIRED MOVEMENT PRACTICE
A Confidence Building/Enhancement Practice that speaks to the basic functions and fundamental act of walking.
Walking is the most primitive, accessible and common form of exercise. The means [most] of us use to get from A to B; a fairly simple act, that can be performed without thinking. Most of us have been walking since before we could talk, but when was the last time you paid attention to YOURSELF ~ aware of your expression? Your energy? Or simply, how you're feeling while you walking? How often do you notice the difference in your stride, or the position of your shoulders ~ when you're sad or angry, compared to when you're happy? When was the last time you simply observed?
Learn to WALK WITH PURPOSE, while you practice ayurvedic ways to LIFT your spirit, your mood and your mindset! An "EARTHING" remedy and Mother Nature's recipe ~ a prescription that may CHANGE YOUR LIFE!
The walk will be through the farm fields and back trails. The natural beauty of the surrounding property is picturesque; with mature trees, wild spaces and a lily pond, which is home to our local wild life.

Situated on a 100 acre farm surrounded by nature, hiking/walking trails, Only a small portion of our 100-acre farm is actually “farmed”. While most of our neighbours are clearing every fence row and bush for more workable land, we have taken over 60 acres of workable land and given it back to nature; Trees, shrubs, wildflowers and herbs are all thriving which gives place to the surrounding wildlife. Common sightings of deer, rabbits, coyotes, wild turkeys, hawks, raccoons, and rare sightings of bob cats, bears, and even a cougar! For over 30 years this has been an ideal setting for fostering our love of herbs and plants, creating our own personal sanctuary. We have reintroduced “at risk plants” and welcomed back Mother Nature to stay. We are very proud to be a Botanical Sanctuary Member of United Plant Savers. Since 2010 herbal wisdom has been shared, taught and felt, through The Science and Art of Herbalism Course and our annual Back To Your Roots Herbal retreat.

- Conference Registration and Information Booth
- Vendor Set-up/Clean up
- Decorating and Signage
- Equipment
- Monitoring Workshops and Intensives
- Coffee and Tea Bar
- Lunch and Dinner
- There are sure to be additional tasks that will need immediate attention, so flexibility is greatly appreciated. Most of our tasks are accomplished before and after the conference and still leave time for participating in many of the classes during the conference.
- All Work Study are expected to stay until the end of the retreat, all work is completed, and Bob gives permission to leave. This is generally around 9:30 p.m. but can be earlier or later depending on the year.
What we offer our Work Study Team & What is Expected in Return:
In exchange for joining our BTYR Work Study Team, we offer a special registration fee of $25.00, which includes tuition, a simple, light lunch and dinner (Regular ticket price $125.00).
Each Work Study participant must be available Friday afternoon at 11:00 and Saturday 8:30 - 9:30pm and should be prepared to work 5 - 10 hours over the course of the conference. All Work Study participants must be at the farm at 11:00 am on Friday, September 7th, for our orientation meeting and to begin our tasks. Please note: If you’re unable to arrive by 11 am on Friday, unfortunately, you’ll not be able to join our BTYR Work Study Team.
As part of the Work Study Team, you may select in advance, two (2) workshops that you have your heart set on attending. We will do our best to work your weekend responsibilities around one of those classes. There is ample free time to attend additional workshops, too.
Please note: Work Study Registration does not include free intuitive reader, this is for attendees only.
Work Study Meals at the BTYR ~ We are providing all Work Study participants a light, lunch and dinner on Saturday, including all day coffee and tea bar.
Because we depend on our Work Study Team, as a measure of your commitment, we request the Work Study registration fee of $25.00 paid in advance. We are unable to hold your space until your registration and payment is received. Registrations are taken in order of receipt until the 12 Work Study positions are filled.
We look forward to connecting with all of the amazing participants who are considering joining the BTYR Work Study Team for 2018 and help make Back To Your Roots an especially amazing and rejuvenating retreat.
